BIRD VIEW OF THE RESORT

Hanchey Bamboo Resort is nestled in quiet countryside just 20 km from the city of Kampong Cham, Cambodia. I still remember the first site visit and my surprise to discover such an untouched paradise with a stunning view of the Mekong river and to be next to the Hanchey pagoda, which is decorated by folkloristic and colourful statues.

The resort offers a unique opportunity to experience yoga and meditation in Cambodia.

“A place that embodies the circle of life.. A place that has forms referenced to nature and rebirth” This is the brief that inspired us throughout the whole design process. Kampong Cham is one of the biggest hubs in Cambodia for Chinese bamboo plantations, it was obvious then what material will be most prominent.

We had the luck to work with one of the most skilled bamboo builders in the country, whom translated the forms that we had described with our drawings into reality During the concept we hoped we could combine the bamboo with rammed earth walls, we tested the local soil and did a few prototypes; unfortunately, the initial budget was reduced during the construction phase, and the client decided to do some value engineering works without really consulting with the designers. The swimming pool has also been built according to a redesign from the client.

I have recently visited the resort as a customer for a meditation retreat and regardless of budget cuts and some redesigns that were not approved by designer, Hanchey resort is a stunning place where nature and architecture are beautifully combined with great balance.
