Using natural materials in public projects is not only a technical choice, but a cultural and environmental one. In projects like the Prek Treng Beach Facility in Sihanoukville, currently under construction, materials such as bamboo and thatch roofing were selected to create architecture that sits gently within its natural landscape.
Natural materials help buildings feel part of their surroundings rather than imposed upon them. They reduce visual impact, improve thermal comfort, and reflect local knowledge and craftsmanship.
Equally important is how people move through these spaces. Pathways follow sinuous, organic curves instead of rigid lines, echoing natural forms found in sand and vegetation. Their width is carefully designed to offer comfort without overbuilding, avoiding excessive hard surfaces. This approach allows the soil and sand to remain permeable, supporting natural drainage and letting the ground “breathe.”
Through thoughtful material choices and sensitive design, public facilities can enhance comfort, respect the environment, and strengthen the relationship between people and place.
